Notebook Reviews: ED WOOD

Tim Burton – 1994. A masterpiece. Director Tim Burton‘s biopic of Edward D. Wood Jr – the supposed worst film-maker of all time – delivers on all fronts. An excellent cast and sparkling screenplay make Ed Wood a joy to [...]

Uncovering Curiosities: David MacDonald’s DEVIL GIRL FROM MARS

There’s something incredibly heart-warming about old science fiction movies. An earnestness runs through them; they’re played so po-faced and so straight that you’d almost believe you were watching something of real nutritional cinematic [...]

Notebook Reviews: MARS ATTACKS!

Tim Burton – 1996 Mars Attacks! is a fantastic Tim Burton directed effort, which is hugely underrated. It doesn’t get enough appreciation. The cast on display here is out of this world – Jack Nicholson, Pierce Brosnan, Sarah [...]

Notebook Reviews: BOWFINGER

Frank Oz – 1999 Bowfinger is a spot-on Hollywood satire with shades of Tim Burton’s Ed Wood. Steve Martin is great as the failing filmmaker and he’s well served by the biting script. Frank Oz‘s film borders on parody but it [...]

Trailer For ’50s B-Movie Homage ANOTHER PLAN FROM OUTER SPACE

Movies In Focus has a special love of old horror and sci-fi movies. The beauty of old movies is that time is a great equaliser, and a low budget films probably don’t look quite as bad as they did when they were first released. Another Plan [...]

Meeting Your Hero: Tim Burton & Vincent Price On The Set Of EDWARD SCISSORHANDS

Tim Burton‘s Edward Scissorhands is probably the most Tim Burton-y movie that the director has ever made. Danny Elfman score – check. Johnny Depp – check. German Expressionism visuals – check. Plot about a misunderstood [...]

What Would Ed Wood Say About This Johnny Depp and Amber Heard Video Apology?

Maybe it’s the low production value or the total disinterest from Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, but there’s something totally bizarre about this apology video from the Hollywood duo. Depp and Heard snuck their pet pooches into Australia [...]

The Trailer Lands For The Remake Of Ed Wood’s PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE

The Remake You’ve Always Wanted: PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE

Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space is often cited as the worst film ever made. We all know that’s not true and the film’s kitsch charm makes us want to believe that it’s bad, but deep down we know it’s really quite good in an old fashioned [...]

Blu-ray Review: HELLGATE Is A Veritable Smorgasbord Of Horror Tropes

Hellgate is a pretty atrocious 1989 B-movie that makes very little sense. It’s a veritable smorgasbord of horror tropes that have been thrown into one movie along with a nod and a wink. You know it’s bad, but you won’t be able to take your [...]

DVD Review: Uwe Boll’s BLOODRAYNE 2: DELIVERANCE Is As Bad As You’d Expect

Uwe Boll is often called the worst film director since Ed Wood. Whilst Wood’s work has gained cult status due to its kitsch quality, the jury is still out on Boll. Having never viewed a Boll film I was curious to see if his work was as bad as [...]

ED WOOD – Tim Burton At His Best

Tim Burton will never top Ed Wood. It’s a fact, case closed. The passionate biopic of the infamous B-movie director and his relationship with Bela Lugosi has parallels with Burton’s own relationship with Vincent Price. Burton brings an [...]

DVD Review: World War II Drama OVERLORD

This 1975 film details the events leading up to Operation Overlord, or as it is more commonly known: D-Day. If you are looking for an action filled war movie in the vein of Saving Private Ryan, then look elsewhere. In fact Overlord has more in [...]

Review: Schlock Horror Movie BLACKWATER VALLEY EXORCISM

Whenever I sit down to watch a film that has the word exorcism, (or any variation of the word) I automatically think that it is going to be a straight rip-off of William Friedkin’s 1970’s classic, The Exorcist. To give Blackwater Valley Exorcism [...]

Will DARK SHADOWS Nail The Coffin Shut On Tim Burton’s Career?

I’ve been a fan of Tim Burton going back to Beetlejuice (1988) – that’s a long time. His interpretation of ‘The Dark Knight’ in Batman and Batman Returns was outstanding for its time and both movies still hold up to this day. However, [...]
