Notebook Reviews: HIS GIRL FRIDAY

Howard Hawks – 1940

4 out of 5 stars

One of the all-time great movies, Howard Hawk’s His Girl Friday is a fast and furious screwball comedy starring (a never better) Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell.

Based on the 1928 play The Front Page by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, the script by Charles Lederer crackles with non-stop witty one-liners. Howard Hawks‘ rat-tat-tat dialogue is on peak display here.

If you want a film which is well-acted, expertly written and brilliantly directed then His Girl Friday is the movie for you. In fact, it should be the move for everyone. Brilliant.
