Notebook Reviews: U-571
Jonathan Mostow – 2000.
Breakdown director Jonathan Mostow delivers and a tense and thrilling submarine thriller in U-571. The cast in this WWII adventure is excellent – Matthew McConaughey, Harvey Keitel, Bill Paxton and…er…Jon Bon Jovi. McConaughey in particular excels in the lead role.
U-571 caused something of a political kerfuffle when it opened in the UK because of its historical inaccuracies – but you should never really let the facts get in the way of a good movie. It might not be factual, but it sure is entertaining.
A worthy addition to to submarine subgenera, U-571 is an enjoyable men on a mission movie.
