Notebook Reviews: HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER’S STONE
Chris Columbus – 2001
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone/Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a so-so kids adventure based the the book by J.K. Rowling.
This Chris Columbus movie has its moments and the occasional impressive spectacle, but it fails to come alive (it’s much too long). Some of the CGI is quite poor – especially in the Quidditch scenes and the Troll fight.
The ‘Harry at home’ scenes are reminiscent of Terry Gilliam‘s brilliant Time Bandits -but without the originality. The young members of the cast are okay, but it’s the older members who really impress (Alan Rickman is a standout).
Average family fare.
