Notebook Reviews: BATTLEFIELD EARTH

Roger Christian – 2000

2.5 out of 5 stars

Battlefield Earth is not as bad as you have been led to believe. Having said that, it’s nothing to rave about either. The special effects are quite good and John Travolta has fun in an over-the-top/camp sort of way (although this is not a good performance). Barry Pepper makes for an anaemic leading man with a seriously bad hairdo, but he’s not helped by a poor role.

The script is dire and the whole thing is implausible – even for a sci-fi of this kind. Having said that, there’s fun to be had in Battlefield Earth if you embrace it in a 1950s B-movie sort of way.
