Notebook Reviews: WITHNAIL AND I
Bruce Robinson – 1987
Writer/director Bruce Robinson’s Withnail And I is a wonderful free-wheeling, plot-free comedy with brilliantly quotable dialogue.
Richard E.Grant and Paul McGann play Withnail And I, two struggling actors who decide to take a break in the country. Along for the ride (literally) is Richard Griffiths, giving a gleeful turn as Withnail’s Uncle Monty, a ‘raving homosexual’ who has his eye set on McGann’s ‘And I’.
Grant excels in a career-making turn and the whole thing plays out like a demented sitcom. Withnail And I is great fun.
