Notebook Reviews: THREE KINGS

4 out of 5 stars

David O. Russell – 1999.

Director David O. Russell delivers as visceral and thought-provoking Gulf War movie in the shape of Three Kings. On the surface this is a war/heist film, but Russell’s film much more than that. The director gives the material a certain cinematic gravitas, adding layers to something which could simply have been solely for entertainment purposes. That’s not to say that Three Kings isn’t fun – the script is very witty and dark humour helps build on the satirical world which Russell has created.

George Clooney is excellent as the world-weary Special Forces soldier who plans a gold heist during the end of the conflict. Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze all give committed performances in the film, which moves at a frenetic pace.

More than just an action movie, Three Kings is entertainment with heft.
