Notebook Reviews: TOP GUN
Tony Scott – 1986
Feel the need for speed. It’s totally preposterous and everything is style over substance, but Tony Scott‘s Top Gun is hugely captivating popcorn fare. Tom Cruise takes to the skies in this energetic aeronautical action pic, showing-off his burgeoning movie star charisma in the process.
This Simpson/Bruckheimer production comes loaded with a pulsating soundtrack and a great supporting cast – Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, Tom Skerritt and others. Top Gun isn’t high art – but it is 1980s Hollywood movie-making at its most bombastic (and I mean that in good way).
Get ready to fly into the danger zone for two hours of pure entertainment.
