From when he first came to prominence in the 1980s, Val Kilmer has always been an actor who was difficult to pin down. From Real Genius and Top Secret! to Top Gun, The Doors and Batman Forever and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Kilmer has always made bold character choices and delivered note perfect performances across a variety of genres. Even a serious battle with throat cancer has stopped him working, but it has sadly affected his voice.
Directed by Leo Scott and Ting Poo, Val uses hours of footage which Kilmer himself shot over decades and utilise Kilmer’s own words via voice-over from his son, Jack. This trailer for Scott and Poo’s documentary is powerful – a true inside look at a man, a husband, a father and actor. Val just had its premiere at The Cannes Film Festival. The film was produced by A24 and acquired by Amazon Studios in the U.S. and Latin America. It will receive a limited theatrical run on 23 July and then hit Amazon Prime Video on 6 August 2021. A24 will distribute the film throughout the rest of the world.
