Notebook Reviews: THE MUMMY RETURNS

Stephen Sommers – 2001

The Mummy Returns is another enjoyable action-adventure from director Stephen Sommers. It’s not quite as good as its predecessor, but this is a good attempt at recreating the magic of that surprise 1999 hit. The first half is particularly good fun, but this loses focus at the midway point.

Brendan Fraser gives the material his all, as do Rachel Weisz and John Hannah (the latter is underused – same with original Mummy Arnold Vosloo). 

Some of the effects are pretty spectacular, while some are pretty atrocious The kid is annoying too. Good fun nonetheless.
