Notebook Reviews: THE HURRICANE

Norman Jewison – 1999

The Hurricane is a noble biopic of Rueben Carter, the middleweight boxer who was falsely accused of murder in 1966 (immortalised in the wonderful Bob Dylan song). Norman Jewison offers assured direction and Denzel Washington delivers another stoic performance in a film which succeeds more than it fails.

However, at times it does feel as if it’s just going through the motions with the required dramatic beats. The first half features too many flashbacks, while the pace picks up in the second half. Worthy.
