Notebook Reviews: SUMMER OF SAM
Spike Lee – 1999
Summer Of Sam is an unfocused and messy film from Spike Lee. While Lee wants to show how the Son Of Sam killings impacted the people of the Bronx in 1976, it never connects on a human level and most of the film’s characters are hugely unlikeable (things aren’t helped by an annoying performance from John Leguizamo).
You get the feeling that Lee wanted to be make something akin to Goodfellas and Boogie Nights, but he fails. Miserably.
