Notebook Reviews: SOLDIER
Paul W. S. Anderson – 1998
Paul W. S. Anderson’s Soldier might be flawed, but it’s an under-seen gem of a science fiction action movie. Kurt Russell is exceptional in a near dialogue-free role which relies heavily on his physicality. Anderson’s film also has a great supporting cast – with Jason Scott Lee, Jason Isaacs, Connie Nielsen, Sean Pertwee and Gary Busey filling out the roster.
Written by David Webb Peoples, Solider has nods towards Ridley Scott’s cult classic Blade Runner (it takes place in the same universe, literally) and while doesn’t quite have the visual scope of that movie, there’s plenty of enjoyment to be had.
Soldier may have tanked at the US box office and went straight-to-video in the UK, but it’s well worth seeking out.
