Get A Look At David Cronenberg’s New Body Horror CRIMES OF THE FUTURE Starring Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux & Kristen Stewart
Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg is returning to the realm of body horror with Crimes Of The Future. The film – which shares a title with a film Cronenberg made in 1970 – has just been announced as being in competition as part of the Cannes Film Festival’s Official Selection.
Two teasers have been released (U.S. and international) – and they both present the film in very different ways. Cronenberg favourite Viggo Mortensen stars in the sci-fi thriller alongside Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart.
Cronenberg might be pushing 80, but it looks like he hasn’t lost the ability to shock and provoke his audience. He hasn’t directed a body horror style film since and eXistenZ in 1999. Over the last 23 years Cronenberg’s films have mainly been dark dramas about the human condition. His last release was 2014’s Maps To the Stars.
Neon will release the film in the U.S. in June 2022 and international dates have yet to be announced.
The synopsis:
As the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the body undergoes new transformations and mutations. With his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), celebrity performance artist, publicly showcases the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde performances. Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator from the National Organ Registry, obsessively tracks their movements, which is when a mysterious group is revealed… Their mission – to use Saul’s notoriety to shed light on the next phase of human evolution.
