David Cronenberg’s 1999 sci-fi thriller eXistenZ has a lot of themes which continue to resonant 20-odd years on. However, this gaming thriller was ultimately superseded by The Matrix which opened later in the same year, winning plaudits and earning huge box office.
Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jude Law star in this mind-bender and both do good work, even if the film doesn’t quite come together until the last few minutes. The supporting cast is also very good: Ian Holm, Callum Keith Rennie, Sarah Polley, Christopher Eccleston and Willem Dafoe.
eXistenZ features plenty of David Cronenberg‘s trademark body horror, and while it might be one of the director’s finest movies, it’s certainly worth checking out.
Budgeted at $15 million, eXistenZ grossed just $2.8 million at the US box office in 1999.
