Notebook Reviews: VANILLA SKY
Cameron Crowe – 2001
Writer/director Cameron Crowe‘s Vanilla Sky is a masterpiece. Crowe’s ‘cover version’ of Alejandro Amenábar’s Open Your Eyes is a glossy and surreal romantic-drama-sci-fi-thriller.
Tom Cruise is fantastic in the lead role, which is tailor-made for his talents. Kurt Russell and Jason Lee give him fine support, while Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz are both excellent as the romantic interests (can you get a better cast than this?).
Crowe’s film features a powerful soundtrack – and its one which helps it tell its narrative in so many ways. Vanilla Sky is one to watch and rewatch.
