George Lucas – 1971
THX 1138 is a powerful feature debut from George Lucas. Lucas’ stark direction is first rate and the film’s visuals are stunning. The lead performance from Robert Duvall is low-key but strong and Donald Pleasence impresses in a supporting role.
So much of Star Wars started here – from Walter Murch’s powerful sound design to the Stormtrooper like enforcers. The whole thing is incredibly well presented and the last act is fantastic.
THX 1138 is wonderfully bleak 1970s science fiction.
