Notebook Reviews: ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES

Kevin Reynolds – 1991

4 out of 5 stars

Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves is an old-fashioned Hollywood swashbuckler. Kevin Costner is on fine form as the eponymous hero in this Kevin Reynolds-directed adventure and Alan Rickman chews the scenery in his iconic turn as the evil Sheriff of Nottingham.

Those looking for historical accuracy will be disappointed – but those looking for a good time will be well-rewarded by this telling of the Robin Hood legend. There’s a luscious Michael Kamen score and a tremendous supporting cast –  Morgan FreemanChristian Slater and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Maid Marian. And that’s before you even get to that Sean Connery cameo.

Just don’t mention that Bryan Adams song!
