Notebook Reviews: GODS AND MONSTERS

Bill Condon – 1998

 Gods And Monsters is a beautiful film, superbly directed by Bill Condon. Ian McKellen is excellent as Frankenstein director James Whale and the actor brings the requisite amount of emotion to the role of Whale in his twilight years. Brendan Fraser surprises in the role of Whales’ gardener and the actor manages to transcend his ‘dumb’ persona and bring humanity to the film.

Condon creates some wonderful atmosphere and the inter-cuts with Bride Of Frankenstein are a wonderful addition. Gods And Monsters comes highly recommended – but ideally try to watch it late at night.
