Yes, Ben Affleck’s Batman is also in there (as is Ezra Miller‘s Flash and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl) – but the big selling point of this new trailer (and TV spot) for The Flash is Michael Keaton’s return as Batman. It’s been over 30 years and now Keaton is back in Gotham City and trying to save the world from Michael Shannon’s General Zod (yes, he’s back too).
It’s thrilling to see Keaton back as Bruce Wayne/Batman. I saw Batman on the big screen in 1989 and it was a powerful experience – and I never thought that Keaton would ever return to the role after 1992’s Batman Returns. I must admit, it’s strange seeing the character divorced from the trappings of Tim Burton’s world and inhabiting a world filled with CGI action. In this trailer, both Keaton’s Dark Knight and Ben Affleck’s seem to spend quite a bit of time in daylight – something which doesn’t really work on screen. It’ll be interesting to see how that works when the film opens on 16 June, 2023.
The multiverse film sees Ezra Miller‘s Flash cross from the Snyderverse into the world of Tim Burton’s Batman films. Andy Muschietti‘s film resets the DC on film continuity, paving the way for the a whole new series of films under the stewardship of DC Studios CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran. I wonder what stays and what goes after this.
Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?
