Get Ready For Controversy: Trailer For Paul Verhoeven’s Religious Thriller BENEDETTA
It looks like Paul Verhoeven is going to do what he does best with Benedetta – court controversy. I can image that the Dutch director behind Basic Instinct and Showgirls is going to get a lot a lot of press for this latest religious thriller which stars Virginie Efira, Charlotte Rampling, Daphné Patakia and Lambert Wilson. A historical erotic lesbian Nun thriller is pretty much hitting the jackpot if you’re playing ‘Verhoeven Bingo’!
The film is based on historian Judith C Brown’s 1986 book Immodest Acts: The Life Of A Lesbian Nun In Renaissance Italy. The below trailer doesn’t pull any punches either – so be warned.
Benedetta is has been confirmed as an official selection at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and will screen in competition during the event which is scheduled to run July 6-17 2021. It will open in France on 9 July 2021.
The synopsis:
In the late 15th century, with plague ravaging the land, Benedetta Carlini joins the convent in Pescia, Tuscany, as a novice. Capable from an early age of performing miracles, Benedetta’s impact on life in the community is immediate and momentous.
