Director Sam Taylor-Johnson To Crack The Whip On 50 SHADES OF GREY

Sam Taylor-Johnson, the director of John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy has landed the directing gig on 50 Shades Of Grey. Well, at least we’ve got that sorted.

Directing duties on 50 Shades have been (bizarrely) much sought after, and it’s believed that Taylor-Johnson was up against the mighty Gus Van Sant, who shot a test reel with Magic Mike star Alex Pettyfer for Universal Pictures and Focus Features. The Wrap quotes an (idiotic sounding) unnamed “executive”, who implies that Taylor-Johnson got the gig because of her ‘femininity’:

“The trick of this movie is making it Not Porn. She can shoot characters. She’s very sexy. She can push that envelope. She shoots magnificent portraits. Not many women can handle that material. It’s edgy stuff. What woman feels comfortable with dildos and sex toys and domination? One way is to immerse yourself in that world.”

Riiiiiiight.

I have no idea what this book/film is about. Is there a plot? Is it just sex? It started out as Twilight fan fiction, so maybe Christian Grey turns into a werewolf in the…er…climax.

It’s believed that Taylor-Johnson became friends with Focus’ James Schamus, while her husband, Kick Ass star Aaron Taylor-Johnson was filming Joe Wright’s Anna Karenina. Ironically, Wright was one of the hot favourites to direct the adaptation.

The director is tied down, so now it’s all about the casting. It’s believed that ‘Universal has its eye’ on Amazing Spider-Man 2 actress Felicity Jones to play Anastasia Steele. Is this true? Is this a good choice? Who knows? Who cares?

As for Christian Grey, he’s every middle-age woman’s fantasy, so god knows who they’ll get to star. Probably someone I’ve never heard of.
