I don’t want to write about the 50 Shades of Grey movie casting – but I feel I must. Dakota Johnson and Charlie Hunnam will play Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey in the big screen adaptation of EL James’ novel. It’s a tome which has spawned a trilogy of books that has shifted over 70 million copies worldwide. A mind-boggling number for something which started out as Twilight fan fiction.
James then decided to up the sex quota and add in a bit of S&M. If a man wrote it he’d be called a colossal pervert, or maybe Bret Easton Ellis. If someone was being incredibly harsh – Joe Eszerthas.
Johnson, the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith has had roles in The Social Network and 21 Jump Street, while Hunnam has acted in Sons of Anarchy, Queer As Folk and Pacific Rim. Sometimes the jokes write themselves.
This adaptation, which will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson hits screens next August (2014). Isn’t the whole 50 Shades zeitgeist thing very 2012?
I know one thing, I won’t be watching this. I could barely make it through one Twilight movie.
