This image of Andrew Garfield, the star of The Amazing Spider-Man carrying a stack of Avengers comic books has set the hearts of many fanboys fluttering. Does it mean that the Sony Pictures owned Spider-Man will be appearing in the Disney owned Avengers sequel?
Well, on the surface it doesn’t mean jack. It’s just a young guy carrying some comic books. It just so happens that the young guy in question is the star of one of the most lucrative superhero franchises of all-time. However, IF Spider-Man was to appear in The Avengers 2, it would involve a lot of legal wrangling.
Sony fought hard to get the rights to Spider-Man, handing MGM their ownership of certain James Bond privileges in order to bring the web-slinger to the screen, and the character isn’t (currently) under the Marvel umbrella at Disney.
The Avengers sequel would likely get a box office bump from Spider-Man’s involvement in the film, but as the first film has already grossed more than $1.4 billion, it’s not like Disney needs to bolster bums on seats and share their billion dollar pie. However, Disney has already set a precedent in mixing their characters with another studio. 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit? saw Disney characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck share the screen with Warner Bros’ Loony Tunes stars like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. So, a Spider-Man/Sony /Avengers/Disney/Marvel team-up isn’t out if the question.
Now, just imagine what furore Garfield would have caused if he’d been picking up some DC titles like Batman or Superman!
