There’s certainly a lot to unpack in this first trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson‘s latest feature, Licorice Pizza. Set in the San Fernando Valley in 1973, the film stars Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman as Alana Kane and Gary Valentine, a young couple attempting to navigate their first serious relationship. Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper and Benny Safdie co-star in the film.
I’m getting serious Almost Famous vibes from this trailer (no bad thing), but I’m having difficulty figuring out the tone and plot for this. One thing is for sure – Bradley Cooper seems to be playing notorious film producer (and former hair stylist) Jon Peters.
Alana Haim is from the all-sister rock group Haim, while Cooper Hoffman is the late Philip Seymour Hoffman’s son.
I feel the Paul Thomas Anderson’s films can sometimes be hit or miss (I wasn’t a fan on Inherent Vice or The Master) – but I’m always willing to go in with an open mind because he delivered greatness with 1999’s Magnolia.
Licorice Pizza hits select US cinemas on 26 November 2021.
