Things have been quiet on the Will Smith front over the last couple of years. Sure, 2012 and 2013 saw him in Men In Black 3 and After Earth – but they’re a pair of substandard movies (that’s being nice) which failed to find fans or critical love. His box office sheen may have tarnished, but Smith is still an engaging screen presence – and that’s why Focus might be a great fit for him.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
Will Smith stars as Nicky, a seasoned master of misdirection who becomes romantically involved with novice con artist Jess (Margot Robbie). As he’s teaching her the tricks of the trade, she gets too close for comfort and he abruptly breaks it off. Three years later, the former flame—now an accomplished femme fatale—shows up in Buenos Aires in the middle of the high stakes racecar circuit. In the midst of Nicky’s latest, very dangerous scheme, she throws his plans for a loop…and the consummate con man off his game.
This was originally intended to be a Ben Affleck/Kristen Stewart pairing, but it now has the former Fresh Prince starring opposite The Wolf Of Wall Street‘s Margot Robbie. Focus is written and directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa the duo behind Crazy, Stupid, Love – a film that was pretty damn entertaining. This looks like it might be one of the best Will Smith movies in a long, long time.
Focus opens on 27 February 2015.
