Now A GREMLINS Remake!
Joe Dante’s Gremlins is a perfect little film, one which has grossed a mighty $153 million at the US box office since it was released in 1984. It has great charm, fantastic pratical special effects, strong story and a wonderful score by Jerry Goldsmith. I’m not a big fan of the sequel, although I now see that it’s getting a lot of rose-tinted reappraisal online.
The news of the remake comes via Vulture, which reports:
“Warner Bros. Pictures is negotiating with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment to reboot their 1984 horror comedy, Gremlins”.
They also state that similar negotiations have taken place over the years but that hammering out a deal with Spielberg is difficult to arrange, financially.
I’ve always found it odd that Warner Bros. never made more of the Gremlins brand, sure the sequel scored more than $100 million LESS than the original, but the name does have a certain amount of cultural cachet.
There’s no doubt in my mind that a new Gremlins film will lack the charm of the original and also replace the great practical effects with CGI. Get ready to be disappointed.
