Notebook Reviews: X-MEN
Bryan Singer – 2000.
Bryan Singer‘s X-Men is a comic book movie which really delivers the goods in a big, big way. A strong screenplay, good character development and a top-notch cast (Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen and others) help make X-Men a real cinematic treat.
Jackman is the standout and his performance as Wolverine is a real star-making turn. He might not have the stature of the famed Marvel comics character, but he more than makes up for any short comings with charisma and screen presence.
Singer’s film is filled with strong dialogue, witty lines and stand-out special effects. It’s a serious change of pace for the director of such gritty thrillers as The Usual Suspects and Apt Pupil.
It’s a real shame that more blockbusters aren’t like X-Men – in a word, it’s X-cellent!
