Notebook Reviews: STARGATE
Roland Emmerich – 1994.
Stargate is an enjoyable and energetic science fiction romp from Master of Disaster Roland Emmerich.
Emmerich’s adventure is derivative – Star Wars and Lawrence of Arabia are particular touchstones – but it’s all done in such an entertaining way that you just go with the flow.
Kurt Russell and James Spader are both excellent as two very different men on a mission into the unknown. Stargate features some impressive effects and a bold and brash score from composer David Arnold.
It’s no classic, but Stargate makes for a fun night’s entertainment.
