The New Director For SUICIDE SQUAD 2 Means Only One Thing: Room For Liam Neeson

Forget Mel Gibson – it looks like Jaume Collet-Serra will be replacing David Ayer as the director of Suicide Squad 2.

The Spanish-born Collet-Serra doesn’t really float the Movies In Focus boat. He’s directed the sub-par Liam Neeson thrillers Non-Stop, Unknown, Run All Night and the forthcoming The Commuter as well as B-movie shark thriller The Shallows amongst others. He doesn’t have the edge that Ayer brought (despite studio interference) and you just know he’s gonna tow the company line. Gibson would have given us something special.

Will Smith and Margot Robbie will return in this sequel to the $745 million grossing hit. The original wasn’t a big critical success –  but I really dug it (read my review) and I’m looking forward to a sequel – but The Spaniard doesn’t really inspire me with confidence. Maybe he’ll bring Liam Neeson along (I jest, but it’s likely).

I could be wrong and maybe Collet-Serra will rise to the challenge of making this feel like something special. As always, time will tell.

Keep reading Movies In Focus for any future 411s on Suicide Squad 2.
