The man in the hat is back!

Indiana Jones will return to screens on July 19, 2019. Harrison Ford will once again play the intrepid archaeologist, while Steven Spielberg will direct and Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will produce this fifth (as yet untitled) film in the long-running franchise.

Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn announced the news in a statement:

“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019. It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”

Indiana Jones creator George Lucas will not be involved in the movie – he relinquished rights in the 2012 Lucasfilm sale to Disney.

Rumours of a fifth Indiana Jones film have been swirling for the last couple of years but this is the first official news. It comes hot on the tail of the success of Lucasfilm/Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That film saw Harrison Ford return to an iconic early role – and it went on to gross over $2 billion at the global box office.

Movies In Focus has been a life-long Indiana Jones fan and while 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull wasn’t prime Indy, it was a rollocking action-adventure. I’m interested to see what Ford and Spielberg have in-store for this. I think there will be something special lined-up as this will likely be Harrison Ford’s swansong in the role.

Movies in Focus will keep you updated on all things Indiana Jones.
