You have to hand it to Ryan Gosling – he’s an actor who has pretty much declined the opportunity to star in big budget tentpole pictures throughout his career. Sure, he has a things like The Notebook and Gangster Squad in his filmography but even they’re relative oddities in the grand scheme of things. That makes his attachment to the Blade Runner sequel very, very curious.
Original screenwriter Hampton Fancher and Ridley Scott hatched the story for this sequel, which is written by Fancher and Michael Green. It’s set 30 years after the 1982 release (set in 2019), but that’s all that is known about the film which shoots next summer.
On release Scott’s film was panned for being ‘style over substance’, charges levelled at Gosling’s Drive, Only God Forgives and his directorial debut, Lost River. I’m hoping Villeneuve’s film keeps the same visual aesthetic and tone as Scott’s original. If that’s the case, Gosling will fit right in.
