The Great Train Robbery Sequence In THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD
Released in 2007, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford was a commercial flop on its release. That’s a huge shame because Andrew Dominik’s western is a glorious piece of cinema. It cost $30 million to produce, but it only grossed $3 million at the US box office and just $15 million globally.
Starring Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, Sam Shepard, Sam Rockwell and Jeremy Renner, Dominik’s film is a real treat. Rich, textured and wonderfully shot by Roger Deakin. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Cinematography for Deakin and Best Supporting Actor for Casey Affleck
The stand-out sequence is the now infamous train robbery scene – it’s one of the great all-time cinema moments. Simply put – it’s beautiful.
