The DOCTOR Scores A WHO-le Lotta Cash On The Big Screen
The incredibly flaccid Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor banked £1.89 million ($2.9 million) worth of green from 440 cinemas in the UK. That puts the special third at the UK box office behind box office juggernauts, The Hunger: Games Catching Fire and Gravity.
The Matt Smith/David Tennant special was also screened on 1, 500 screens globally, and it racked up a further $204,000 in the U.S., $317,000 in Germany and $30,700 in Spain – not bad for something that was being shown on television at the same time.
The Day of The Doctor also entered the Guinness World Record books for being the world’s largest simulcast of a TV drama. In the UK it averaged 10. 2 million viewers. Looks like that over-hyping may have been worth it. This shows that the cult of Who is growing and it looks like a Doctor Who movie won’t be far away.
