Move Over Benedict Cumberbatch – There’s A New MR HOLMES On Baker Street
Movies In Focus is a big fan of classical interpretations of Sherlock Holmes. Forget the Benedict Cumberbatch series or Johnny Lee Miller’s Elementary, I’ve always been onboard with Jeremy Brett’s Holmes from the ‘80s and ‘90s. That’s why I’m excited by Bill Condon’s Mr Holmes with Ian McKellen as the legendary literary character (check out the poster and trailer below).
The film focuses on Holmes in the twilight of his life, looking back over his career from his retirement home in Sussex. Condon and McKellan’s last collaboration was the excellent Gods and Monsters, a drama that looked at Frankenstein director James Whale’s relationship with his young gardener. Mr Holmes appears to have the same poignancy which made that film special.
Laura Linney, Frances de la Tour and Milo Parker co-star in Mr Holmes, which is based on Mitch Cullin’s 2005 novel A Slight Trick of the Mind
Mr Holmes opens in the UK on 19 June 2015.
