If They’re Remaking ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Then Robert Rodriguez Isn’t A Bad Choice

Escape From New York doesn’t need a remake. I’m not taking the Plisskin – the original is great. However, Hollywood has been plundering John Carpenter‘s back catalogue for years and Escape From New York has been on the starting block for a long time (originally with Gerard Butler replacing Kurt Russell as Snake Plisken). Now comes the news that Robert Rodriguez is set to direct the film, with Deadline reporting that ‘Carpenter will be an executive producer and have a big say in the tone of the project’.

Rodriguez has form for riffing on Carpenter. From Dusk Till Dawn and Planet Terror owe a great debt to his work, so if they’re trying to capture his style, then he’s the man. If it’s being remade then I can’t complain too much if Mr Mariachi is the dude behind the lens.

20th Century Fox is producing the film, which it hopes will become a Planet of the Apes style franchise. Rodriguez has just wrapped James Cameron’s long-gestating Alita: Battle Angel for the studio, so they must have liked what they saw on that pic.

Movies In Focus will keep you posted on this one.
