THE EXPENDABLES 3: Stars Talk Sequels, Spin-offs, Injuries And Ratings

London Photocall For "The Expendables 3" When I attended the London Press conference for The Expendables 3 (it’s a great action film - read the Movies In Focus review) I heard the stars give some interesting snippets on various things including the PG-13 (12 A UK) for the film (something which doesn’t harm the movie at all - it’s pretty violent). There was also talk of sequels and spin-offs (The Expendabelles) and what it’s like getting injured on set on. Check out what Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, Jason Statham and producer Avi Lerner had to say.

On The Film’s Rating

Sylvester Stallone: ‘The idea with PG-13, we wanted to hit a broad audience and because of our predecessors, looking at the Bournes and James Bonds, we thought they’re pretty violent films. They’re extremely graphic without pushing it. Of course when we do the DVD then you’ll see the next 80 frames and go, ‘Oh, there it is!’I thought also the amount of violence and warfare in this movie, if it was graphic it would almost be too much. Even though I personally enjoy it, it would be pushing the envelope and also diminish the humour.”

On Getting Injured

Antonio Banderas: ‘’I got injured the first take that I did in the movie. I carried on all the way through but I didn’t say because I didn’t want anyone to think I was getting older. It was running on the roof to the helicopter, the first shot and I got pain in my right knee – now it’s gone but it stayed there for a couple of months.”

Stallone : “You got a pain in the knee? I wake up with that. Usually I grade the quality of the film by the intensity of the injury.’If I do Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot! I never get hurt,, I do Rambo or The Expendables I break my neck and I dislocate both shoulders. I go, ‘this is going to be a great movie’. This one, I ended up really taking a fall on my back and ended up having some metal inserted in there so if I’m squeaky, deal with it – it’s not my shoes, it’s my back!”

Jason Statham: “I snapped shoelace – that was it.”

On The Expendabelles And More Sequels

Avi Lerner: ‘’We are right now in the final lines of the script, we’ve got lots of ideas about who is going to be all the action movie stars it, and we plan to it at the beginning of next year. That’s all I can say.’’

Stallone: “We’d like to continue this, it’s an on-going experiment -you have a great franchise in The Avengers where you can branch-off into other things. Ideally, I’d love to see some of these characters, like Antonio and the young Expendables go off and do their own movie. I know that’s maybe a pipe dream, then you come together for the BIG festival of violence and the great challenge of whoever the villain is. That would be the ideal. I think it all depends on this one here, I could definitely see one and a half more at least. Maybe two more, you never know. The third one, I’ve always found, when I started doing films that would’ve been franchises, I was ridiculed for it- we all were – it was like ‘oooh, franchise’. I was always trying to compete with television – how can they do ten years of the same character or All In The Family, the same location and you do one film an, oh that’s the end. Some films are designed like that, other films you have characters who continue to grow and manifest different personalities. Now with Expendables you’ve got a situation where we’re in unchartered waters to put all women together and think will that really work? You’ve got to perhaps put on women that are really know to be tough, other MMA fighters. Are The Expendablelles really part of a divorce with Barney and say, Sigourney Weaver who was my wife and she inherited half the Expendables. I’ve gotta deal with that – I lost the house and my mercenaries. It’s all these thing were trying to concoct, so when we do it doesn’t just languish there as just a use of the name. It’s something that would hold its own. We don’t just want to use the name – it needs to be something that can hold its own.’’
