Bruce Willis is a great comedy actor and it’s a real shame that he doesn’t star in a lot of comedies. It’s a even bigger shame that when he does, he just plays Bruce Willis – and role that he’s become very good at playing in recent years.

However, Willis seems to be ditching well paying action-thrillers and started stretching himself as an actor again. He’s heading to Broadway to star in a stage adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery and he’s lined-up a role in Woody Allen’s next film. Now comes the news that he’s taking the lead in a new detective comedy for Voltage Pictures.

The currently untitled comedy will be written and directed by Mark and Rob Cullen, who wrote Willis much maligned (but actually not that bad) Cop Out.

The film is about a down but not out L.A-based private investigator whose professional and personal worlds collide after his loving pet Buddy is stolen by a notorious gang.  A series of bizarre circumstances find him doing the gang’s bidding, while being chased by two vengeful Samoan brothers, a loan shark’s goons, and a few other shady characters. Willis’ character goes to extraordinary lengths to be re-united with his best friend’

With a bit of luck this will feature a light and breezy performance from Willis – and not his default bad-ass mode. I’m hoping for something a long the lines of Hudson Hawk or The Last Boy Scout. I can dream, can’t I?
