THE BATMAN: Casting Continues For Matt Reeves’ Superhero Reboot

Movies In Focus is quietly confident that Matt Reeves will deliver something exciting with The Batman. Yes, deep down I’m disappointed that Ben Affleck never got to star and direct (and co-write) the film, but ‘thems the breaks’ as they say.

I’m cool with Robert Pattinson playing The Dark Knight – and I think he might bring a bit of that Michael Keaton weirdness to the role that we haven’t had in a long, long time, Now that Joker has hit screens (read the Movies In Focus review), Reeves has begun to fill out the supporting roles – and I’m quite liking the off-beat choices that he’s making.

Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon – I totally dig this. Jefferey Wright has a certain inherent decency as a screen presence and that’s exactly what you need for Jim Gordon – one of the last good men in Gotham City.

Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman – another good selection. I always think that Batman is a much more interesting character when Catwoman is around I can see Kravitz working very well alongside Pattinson.

Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler – I never would have thought of Dano as The Riddler, but when you think about the casting, it’s great. Dano as a certain…quality and as actor and I think he portrays weedy confidence quite well – something that would work for The Riddler (who hasn’t been seen the big-screen since 1995!). Jonah Hill was apparently angling for this role (Reeves wanted him for The Penguin) and negotiations fell apart. So what?

Behind the scenes talent is also coming together – with Michael Giacchino being hired to score the movie.

All Reeves needs to do now is cast Richard E. Grant as Alfred Pennyworth and we’re off to the races.

The Batman opens in 2021.
