Sony: Hacking, Leaks, Jolie, Fincher, SPIDER-MAN, SPECTRE, THE INTERVIEW And North Korea
The Sony hacking is unprecedented. No Hollywood studio (or large corporation for that matter) has ever been exposed in such a way. Private emails, film plans and sensitive personal information have all been leaked. It has become a feeding frenzy for those interested in the machinations of Hollywood.
The emails between Sony Pictures co-Chair Amy Pascal and producer Scott Rudin are the icing on the cake. The discussions about the Jobs film are particularly revealing. It features a gaggle of Hollywood A-listers including Michael Fassbender, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, Angelina Jolie, Danny Boyle, Aaron Sorkin and David Fincher. The whole thing is like a 21st Century, meta version of Robert Altman‘s The Player. The plans for the 21 Jump Street /Men In Black crossover is something of a fanboy fantasy, but this pales in comparison to Sony’s plan to ‘loan’ Spider-Man to Marvel. Even the latest James Bond film SPECTRE gets a touch, with bosses fearful of the film’s $300 million budget.
Is North Korea behind it as a way of sabotaging the release of Sony’s The Interview? It’s hard to say if they’re directly involved, but it’s highly likely (an organisation called Guardians of Peace is claiming credit).
We’ve never seen anything like this before, but I get the feeling we’ll see much more of it in the future.
