Remembering Stuart Gordon

Iconic cult filmmaker Stuart Gordon was perhaps best known for 1985’s Re-Animator, but the wrier/director had a prolific career in the horror and science fiction genres.

Across his career, Gordon took a lot of inspiration from H. P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe, adapting many of their tales to the screen. Re-Animator, From Beyond, Dagon, as well as the Masters of Horror episode Dreams in the Witch-House were all inspired by Lovecraft, while 1991’s The Pit and the Pendulum and the Masters of Horror episode The Black Cat were Poe adaptations. In 2009, he directed the theatre show Nevermore…An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe, which reunited him with Re-Animator star Jeffrey Combs. 

Gordon also wrote Disney’s Honey I Shrunk the Kids (and produced its sequel, Honey, I Blew Up The Kid), as well as Abel Ferrara’s 1993 film Body Snatchers. Other notable directing credits for Stuart Gordon include Castle Freak (1995), Fortress (1992), Space Truckers (1996) and the 2005 screen adaption of David Mamet’s Edmond. 

Stuart Gordon passed away on 24 March 2020 at the age of 72.
