Pondering Curtis Hanson’s WONDER BOYS 16 Years On

Curtis Hanson has died at the age of 71.

He’ll be forever known for LA Confidential, but Wonder Boys is a Movies In Focus favourite. Hanson’s adaptation of Michael Chabon’s novel is an almost the perfect film – smart script, wonderful performances and a fine soundtrack. It didn’t quite hit me in the way that I thought it would on its first viewing way back when it was released in 2000 (16 years ago!), but I knew it was a grower and it improved over the years.

Michael Douglas has a ball as Grady Tripp, the writer who just can’t stop writing. Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. almost steals the movie as his crazed editor.

Well worth your time.
