Notebook Reviews: SPHERE

3.5 out of 5 stars

Barry Levinson – 1998.

Sphere is an under-appreciated, but enjoyable science fiction film from director Barry Levinson. The first 3/4 of this big screen adaptation of Michael Crichton‘s novel is great stuff, but the film literally loses the plot towards the end – and it suffers because of this.

A great cast (Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, Sharon Stone, Liev Schreiber and Peter Coyote) means that Sphere really delivers on an acting level and everyone involved brings some well honed humour to their performances.

It’s too bad that the ending of Sphere lets the film down. It’s not enough to hinder your enjoyment of what has gone before, but it’s disappointing nonetheless.
