Notebook Reviews: SEVEN
David Fincher – 1995.
David Fincher’s Seven is a landmark movie in the serial killer thriller genre. It’s a film which can stand repeated viewings – even with that shock ending.
A strong premise (death by the seven deadly sins) and a great script from Andrew Kevin Walker impress, but Seven is really brought to life by David Fincher‘s superb direction. The film is wonderfully grim, with muted colours and grimy sets. You can almost smell the filth.
Brad Pitt is excellent as the cocky young cop and Morgan Freeman adds gravitas as the senior detective on the verge of retirement. They’re a well matched pair. Strong support also comes from Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey and R. Lee Ermey (always great).
Seven might be a dark film – but it’s highly recommended.
