Notebook Reviews: PAYBACK
Brian Helgeland -1999.
Payback is a slick but gritty modern film noir from writer-turned-director Brian Helgeland. Mel Gibson plays things somewhat against type as the anti-hero out for revenge after being double-crossed and left for dead. It’s a great turn from the star, who manages to balance the violence with some wonderful tough guy humour. The supporting cast is also very good – Gregg Henry, Maria Bello, David Paymer, William Devane, James Coburn and Kris Kristofferson (amongst others).
Helgeland’s thriller has a real 1970s feel, with glorious looking bleach bypass visuals and a wonderful evocative musical score from Chris Boardman.
Violent and at times very funny, Payback is an entertaining Hollywood studio film with a real independent edge. Get ready to root for the bad guy!
