Notebook Reviews: PACIFIC HEIGHTS

John Schlesinger – 1990

4 out of 5 stars

Pacific Heights is a gripping psychological thriller from director John SchlesingerMelanie Griffith and Matthew Modine are great as the young couple who buy a house and bring in tenants to help cover the bills. Things take a bad turn when Michael Keaton‘s Carter Hayes arrives. This Hithcockian thriller has great tension, but things truly come alive when Keaton is on the screen. He delivers a brilliant turn as the villain of the piece.

Pacific Heights really comes into its when in the last act when Schlesinger opens up the film’s scope when it could so easily have run out of steam. The whole thing is great fun.
