Notebook Reviews: BULWORTH

Warren Beatty – 1998.

Warren Beatty‘s Bulworth is a highly enjoyable political satire with a ferocious bite. Beatty is at the top of his game here as star, director, producer and co-writer and he really delivers on all fronts. It’s the perfect role for Beatty, riffing on his on-screen persona as well as his off-screen political activity. The film also includes an impressive supporting cast – Halle Berry, Oliver Platt, Don Cheadle and Jack Warden – and they all fully commit to the hard-edged material.

Bulworth is a highly outrageous piece of filmmaking and in many ways it’s amazing that a major film studio was willing to stump up $30 million to pay for it. The film features some excellent standout scenes – and powerful ending. Bulworth pushes the boundaries and really goes places you wouldn’t believe.

It may have failed to connect with audiences when it was on the big screen, but Bulworth comes highly recommended.
