You really can’t beat a good submarine movie. Tense and impossibly claustrophobic, this sub-genre (pun intended) always has the potential to deliver great dramatics. Black Sea sees director Kevin MacDonald captain Jude Law through stormy waters in search of treasure – and it looks great (even if I’m not a huge fan of Law’s).
MacDonald is a quiet auteur who has delivered a slew of quality films including The Last King Of Scotland and State Of Play. Here’s the official synopsis for his latest effort:
Black Sea centres on a rogue submarine captain (Jude Law) who, after being laid off from a salvage company, pulls together a misfit crew to go after a sunken treasure rumoured to be lost in the depths of the Black Sea. As greed and desperation take control on board their claustrophobic vessel, the increasing uncertainty of the mission causes the men to turn on each other to fight for their own survival.
Black Sea opens in the UK on 5 December 2014
