Guardians Of The Galaxy helmer James Gunn has taken a bullet and been whacked by Disney honchos after controversial old Tweets from the writer-director were unearthed. The decade-old social media posts, which were made in jest, dealt with rape, paedophilia and other controversial subjects. They came to right after they were ‘leaked’ by Republican politicos who took umbrage with Gunn’s contast attacks on Donald Trump and their party.
Gunn apologised, but the damage was done. He was in Disney’s sights.
Walt Disney Chairman, Alan Horn said this about Gunn’s firing:
“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him.”
Here’s the thing…
We now live in crazy times, where the social justice warriors are taking over. The past must be clean and everyone must be on the same page or the pack will pounce. Should Gunn have posted those tweets? Probably not, but they are meant as humour and should be taken as such. The man made billions of dollars for Disney and now they’ve thrown him under the bus because of a few jokes which haven’t aged well. Is everyone who works for the company a saint?
We can’t white-wash our pasts. The last week has already seen students in Manchester defacing Rudyard Kipling’s The White Man’s Burden – and the reason? They don’t agree with it’s ‘racism’. The past is what it is, we learn from it and move on – it’s not something that can be deleted (although Gunn’s tweets now have been).
And don’t even get me started on the Scarlett Johansson Rub & Tug thing. But that’s a subject for a different day.
It’ll be interesting to see what – and who is next.
