GAME OF THRONES: THE LAST WATCH At Nottingham’s Broadway Cinema

David Benioff and D. B. Weiss’ Game Of Thrones became a full-blown cultural phenomenon. The HBO adaptation of George R.R Martin’s book series managed to capture the hearts and minds of a diverse range of people – even those who don’t like fantasy. The eighth and final season met with a mixed response from fans and many were unhappy with how the show ended. But if there’s one thing we know – it’s that you can’t please everyone. If you’re wondering, Movies In Focus enjoyed it.

Nottingham-based documentary filmmaker Jeanie Finlay was given the task of documenting the filming of this final season, a top secret endeavour which saw the director and her crew entrenched in Belfast for a year-long shoot, something which gave them ‘unprecedented access’ to the show’s cast and crew. The result was Game Of Thrones: The Last Watch, a brilliant documentary which had on a screening and Q&A session at Nottingham’s Broadway Cinema on Monday 27 May 2019.

Director Jeanie Finlay and the documentary’s stars Andy McClay (who was a series extra) and Del Reid (the show’s ‘snow man’) were at the screening to discuss the film once the end credits rolled. It was a great night – and audience members who asked questions received a poster for the film. Obviously, Movies In Focus had to put his hand up – scoring a question about the power of Ireland as a filming location and a poster in the process.
